House in the AlpesUniversity Project (2001)
An excursion to the southern part of Switzerland stood at the beginning of this project. We traveled for one week and discovered the beautiful world of the alpes. We moved very traditional by a train, called Bernina Express, which is running from Pontresina to Tirano, Italy. The task was to find a site for an architectural design project along that way and to find a suitable use for the house to be built just at that place. I chose a small rounded hill-top just at Diavolezza station, with a view to a beautiful valley and I decided to design a research station for students. The idea was to create a house that is living with the season. For more then 3 months there is so much snow that it is not possible to use the house. At that time it will be like a stone – completely closed and snowed up. But when spring starts and the snow is melting life will fill the house and then it will blossom like a flower, you can move different parts through pushing and folding so that the house will open towards that nice valley. |
