I have been living in Sydney for the past 13 years and the city never fails to surprise me. The harbour changes colour and mood daily, the sun is out most of the time and travelling over the hills can open up unexpected views. Sometimes I still discover small hidden laneways with cosy coffee shops tucked away in little terrace houses. Going for a summer swim in the glistering ocean, bushwalking and discovering hidden bays or just going for a stroll around the famous Opera house still makes me feel like a tourist in my own city. I came here in 2004 with the hope of finding a job as an architect, the situation for recent graduates was bleak in Germany and after several contract work positions I decided to make the big move. I still remember how I arrived at the airport with my backpack at 6 o'clock in the morning. I took a train to Circular Quay and went for a walk along the harbour. Not many people were around only some early joggers enjoying the winter sun. Sydney was intimidating and impressive at the same time. I was looking forward to this new adventure but at the same time I felt a little lost in this place. Within two weeks I got used to the loud and offensive sounding birds in the morning, found my first job for a project development company and moved into a little shared apartment in Glebe overlooking the Anzac Bridge. Everything seemed to fall into place. I had lunch at Cockle Bay of the beautiful Darling Harbour, discovered my new hometown and rode my bike to work on weekdays and to the beach on weekends. Over the next years I worked for several architectural practices, my favourite office location was at Bondi Beach were I would have a swim at lunch time in summer and try and spot some whales in winter. I met my partner in Sydney and in 2009 we welcomed our beautiful daughter and in 2011 her little brother. Life changed and got busier, sometimes it was overwhelming without any family support, running from work to daycare, to home but somehow we managed and it is getting easier. In my current job I am in the wonderful position to deal with exceptionally interesting projects in probably some of the most stunning locations in the whole world. My clients are people with different backgrounds and interesting lives. I am listening to their stories and wholly enjoy designing and crafting a new home for them.
